Now, like every other electronic device, the Chromecast also receives updates on a regular basis. Each update comes with some improvements that are necessary for its upkeep. The updates are automatic, and we don’t ever have to worry about them unless something goes wrong. Updates are subject to issues and Chromecast, being an electronic device, is prone to them as well. So, if your last firmware update was not smooth or if it failed, you may have to force your device to do it.
How to Update Chromecast Firmware?
Until recently, forcing was not an option. You could only fix a problem by going to the executives but not anymore! Some brilliant minds have found a solution, and we present it to you in this article. It is simple but may vary from one operating system to the other. So, choose the option that suits your system and get going.
Find the IP address
The first step to force a Chromecast update is to find its IP address. You can go to the Google Home app on your phone and navigate to Devices. Select Settings and scroll until you see a few details such as current firmware version, the MAC address, and the IP address. Note down or copy the address on MS Doc.
Where it says <Chromecast IP>, replace it with the IP address you copied.
Force Chromecast update – Windows
All you need is PowerShell. If you have Windows 10, you will already have access to PowerShell. If you have any older version of Windows, you will have to find it online and download it. Once done, open the app and paste the command below there. Where it says <Chromecast IP>, replace it with your device’s IP address.
Once you use the respective command, you will see your Chromecast in the update mode. You can monitor the progress on the screen itself. Within a few minutes, the update will have downloaded.
Ready to use the all-updated and better Chromecast? Go for it!
No Audio in HBO Max app (Chromecast with Google TV)
21/10/2020
I've been experiencing audio cutouts on my new Chromecast with Google TV. So far it has only happened in the HBO Max app. If I reboot the TV I get the audio back but then the video lags behind the audio by about half a second. A full reboot of the Chromecast did not solve the issue either. No problems in any other app so far, just HBO.

Enabling the option 'Never use surround sound' seems to have done it for the time being. Not sure why this would have any effect on the hbo max app specifically, but glad to have a solution!

Same issue here. Though I haven't rebooted tv yet, will try that. But only new uploads to hbo max do not give sound, older shows work for some reason.

Hi Josh,
Thanks for stopping by the Chromecast Community and apologies for the late reply. If other apps installed works and only one isn't. Uninstall and reinstall the app to get the latest update. If it still doesn't work, contact the in-app support and let them know about your casting experience.

Reinstalling the HBO Max app did not solve the problem unfortunately. I am still experiencing the problem with any and all shows/movies on HBO.

I'm sorry you're having issues. Unfortunately I don't have HBO Max to test this.
Aside from the suggestion above (to uninstall and reinstall HBO Max), have you tried any of the following?
Restart the Chromecast
Settings > System > Restart
Try toggling some of the sound options
Settings > Display & Sound > Advanced sound settings (try 'automatic' and the other options)
Settings > Display & Sound > System sounds (try turning this off or on)
Check to make sure your Chromecast is up to date. It will typically auto-update overnight, but worth checking.
Settings > System > About > System update > Check for update
Does the sound work with or without Bluetooth speaker/headphones connected? Or does it not work regardless?
If you are still having issues, send feedback via the Chromecast. This is very helpful as the engineers will have the log files to possibly pinpoint the issue and fix it. Unfortunately you won't receive a reply, but they ensure us all that they read everything. To do that, go to Settings > Help & Feedback > Send feedback.
Please let us know if you find a solution.

Glad to hear that worked!
Definitely still report this via the 'send feedback' feature so they have the log files and can maybe figure out why it's behaving this way.
